Chapter 35 - Ambush in the Night

The sheer, overwhelming volume of Alejandro’s aggressive suppressive fire caught the cartel mercenaries completely off guard. For a few crucial, bloody seconds, their heavy machine guns faltered, focusing entirely on the lone, imposing figure of the former cartel boss standing fearlessly on the dark tarmac.
Vargas didn't hesitate. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, pushing the heavy, armored SUV through the hail of stray bullets, driving wildly across the runway directly toward the open cargo ramp of the federal transport plane.
"Keep your heads down!" Valeria screamed, throwing her body entirely over Mateo and Leo as bullets violently pinged and shattered against the thick, bulletproof glass of the vehicle.
The SUV careened onto the metal ramp of the massive plane, the tires screeching loudly as Vargas hit the brakes. Federal agents immediately swarmed the vehicle, pulling the terrified family and Doña Socorro out and pushing them into the safety of the armored fuselage.
"Are you the Ríos family?" a tall, tactical agent wearing a DEA jacket demanded, grabbing Valeria’s arm. "I am Agent Ramirez. Do you have the drive?"
Valeria shoved the silver hard drive into the agent’s chest with fierce, undeniable authority. "I have it. But you promised him full immunity. You have to send your men out there to help him right now!"
Ramirez looked out the cargo doors. The situation on the tarmac was rapidly deteriorating. Alejandro was pinned down heavily behind a stack of rusted oil drums, completely surrounded by advancing cartel sicarios.
"We are totally outgunned, ma'am," Ramirez yelled over the deafening roar of the plane engines and the relentless gunfire. "My men are taking heavy casualties. The pilot is initiating an emergency takeoff in sixty seconds. If Ríos doesn't make it to this ramp, we are leaving without him."
"No!" Valeria shrieked, completely losing her mind. She tried to run back down the cargo ramp, desperate to reach the man she loved, but Vargas caught her around the waist, pulling her back into the safety of the plane.

"You can't go out there, Valeria! You will die!" Vargas yelled, his face covered in soot and sweat.
Valeria sobbed hysterically, watching helplessly through the open cargo doors as the cartel forces slowly closed in on Alejandro’s isolated position.
