Chapter 22 - The Price of Legitimacy

In the sunlit west wing of the mansion, Valeria was completely unaware of the dark storm gathering in the basement. She sat at a large, round wooden table covered in colorful building blocks, finger paints, and alphabet flashcards. Mateo was sitting on her left, intently drawing a picture of a large green dinosaur, while her younger brother, Leo, was trying to balance a precarious tower of blocks.
"Look, Val!" Leo cheered, his cheeks flushed with healthy color. The heart surgery had been a complete success, and the frail, sick boy she had been so desperate to save was now a whirlwind of endless energy. "It's a skyscraper!"
"It's beautiful, Leo," Valeria smiled, reaching over to ruffle his hair. She looked at Mateo, who was humming a soft, happy tune as he colored. The transformation in the little boy was nothing short of miraculous. He no longer flinched at sudden noises, and the terrifying, violent outbursts were a thing of the past. He had found his voice, and he used it to ask endless questions about the world.
Just then, the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway clicked open. Alejandro walked in, looking exhausted. The meeting with the Culiacán faction had been a disaster. They had demanded a heavier cut of the trafficking routes, threatening a turf war if Alejandro continued to pull away from the drug trade.
He stopped in the doorway, letting the sight of Valeria and the children wash over him like a soothing balm. Valeria looked up and met his gaze. She instantly recognized the dark, troubled shadow lingering in his eyes. It was the same look he had worn the night the mercenaries had breached the house.
"Boys, why don't you take your drawings to Doña Socorro in the kitchen?" Valeria suggested softly. "Tell her I said you could have one chocolate chip cookie each."
May you like
As the boys cheered and bolted down the hall, Valeria stood up and walked over to Alejandro. "What happened? You look like you're carrying the weight of the world again."
"Just old ghosts refusing to stay buried," Alejandro murmured, leaning against the doorframe and closing his eyes. "I am trying to build a clean house for us, Valeria. But the foundation is built on mud."
