Chapter 4 - The Transfer

|

Within twelve minutes, the atmosphere of City General Hospital transformed entirely.

The quiet emergency room was flooded by a specialized medical transport unit from Vance Memorial Academic Center—the most advanced private facility in the state. Four security guards in dark suits stood at the entrance of Bay Nine, while a team of top neonatal specialists rushed into the room carrying specialized life-support equipment.

Dr. Bennett looked flabbergasted as the Chief of Maternal Medicine from Vance Memorial took over the chart.

"Evelyn Vance," the Chief Doctor said respectfully, reading the updated paperwork. "We have two units of your exact blood type waiting in the mobile ICU outside. We are moving you to our private surgical suite immediately."

Arthur Sterling walked into the bay, immaculate in a gray suit despite the hour. He leaned over my gurney and handed me a fountain pen.

"Your father requested two things," Arthur said gently. "First, that you sign this patient transfer authorization under your legal birth name. Second, a total privacy lock on your records."

I took the pen. My hand was pale, but my stroke was firm.

Evelyn Rose Vance.

For six years, I had hidden behind the name Evelyn Cross to protect my husband’s fragile ego. Signing my real name felt like shedding a layer of poison.

"What about Julian?" Nurse Tessa asked, pointing to the platinum band sitting on the metal tray. "He left his ring."

I glanced at the shiny piece of metal that had once meant the world to me.

"Put it in a plastic biohazard bag and leave it on the table," I instructed cold-heartedly. "When he comes back expecting a broken woman, let him find his trash."

Arthur motioned to the paramedics. "Move her out. Clear the highways."

As they wheeled my gurney toward the private ambulance, the rain outside seemed to clear, revealing the cold, sharp light of the city skyline.
