Chapter 16 - The Downfall

|

While I was being rushed into emergency surgery, Julian Cross was sitting in a holding cell at the city police station.

Federal investigators had already raided his office, seizing hard drives, financial ledgers, and personal correspondence. His mother, Margaret Cross, had been brought in for questioning regarding the fraudulent conservatorship affidavits.

Julian sat on the cold bench, staring at his bare ring finger.

The holding cell door opened, and Arthur Sterling stepped inside, holding a thin manila envelope.

"Where is she?" Julian croaked, his eyes bloodshot. "How is Evelyn? Has the baby been born?"

Arthur didn't answer right away. He placed the envelope on the steel table between them.

"You are facing charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy," Arthur said in a flat tone. "Your mother has already signed a plea deal, admitting that you paid her to draft those fake mental health statements."

Julian buried his face in his hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "I ruined everything. I had a loving wife, a family, an empire... and I threw it away for Chloe."

"You didn't throw it away for Chloe," Arthur corrected coldly. "You threw it away for your own hollow vanity. You couldn't handle being married to a woman who was superior to you in every way, so you tried to crush her."

"Is she alive?" Julian wept, grabbing Arthur’s sleeve. "Please, Sterling! Just tell me if my daughter is alive!"

Arthur pulled his sleeve away from Julian’s grasp.

"Evelyn is in critical condition," Arthur replied. "And as for your daughter... she was born five minutes ago."
