Chapter 15 - The Call Log Evidence

Back in the hospital room, the video call ended.
I leaned my head back against the pillows, exhaustion washing over me like a heavy tide. My father poured a glass of water and handed it to me, his hands remarkably gentle.
"You handled that like a true Vance," Harrison said quietly.
"I didn't do it for power, Dad," I whispered, looking down at my swollen stomach. "I did it so she never has to grow up believing she has to shrink herself for a man."
Suddenly, the door to the ICU burst open.
Dr. Aris Thorne rushed in, flanked by two neonatal nurses. The heart rate monitor beside my bed began to emit a rapid, terrifying sequence of high-pitched beeps.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
"Her blood pressure is spiking!" Dr. Thorne yelled, checking the ultrasound monitor. "The abruption is expanding! We have to deliver the baby right now or we lose them both!"
My father grabbed my hand. "Evelyn!"
"Dad!" I screamed as severe agony tore through my lower belly. "Save her! Please!"

"Prep OR Three!" Dr. Thorne ordered, pushing my bed out into the hallway at a full sprint. "Get the neonatal crash cart ready! We have two minutes!"
The world blurred into a chaos of bright fluorescent lights, shouting doctors, and the cold metal of the operating room.
