Chapter 19 - The Rebuilding

I took the letter from Arthur.

I didn't open it immediately. I looked at Julian’s messy handwriting on the front: To Evelyn.

Six years ago, a letter from him would have made my heart flutter. Now, it felt like a ghost from a past life that no longer had any power over me.

I slowly tore the envelope in half, then tore it again, dropping the pieces into the wastebasket beside my wheelchair.

"Not reading it?" Harrison asked, raising an eyebrow.

"There is nothing he can say that changes what he did," I replied, gazing back at my daughter inside the incubator. "He chose his path in Bay Nine. I am choosing mine right here."

Over the next few months, Vance Memorial became my sanctuary.

Every single day, I sat beside Aurora, reading her stories, singing her songs, and watching her weight increase ounce by ounce. With the help of top medical care and unyielding love, my baby girl grew stronger.

At four months old, Aurora was finally cleared to go home.

On the day of her discharge, the front gates of the Vance Estate opened wide. The grand stone mansion that I had abandoned six years ago was now filled with baby cribs, soft toys, and golden sunlight. I was no longer the naive girl who ran away to prove a point. I was Evelyn Vance—a mother, a survivor, and an heiress who had reclaimed her crown.
