Chapter 1 - The Cold Goodbye

The monitors in Emergency Bay Nine were screaming, but my husband’s phone was louder.
I was thirty-two weeks pregnant, bleeding through the hospital sheets, and clutching the metal handrail as a sharp wave of agony ripped through my abdomen. Dr. Maya Bennett pressed a gloved hand against my stomach, her eyes wide with urgency.
"Placental abruption," Dr. Bennett said, turning toward the tall man standing near the sliding glass doors. "Mr. Cross, your wife is in critical condition. Her blood pressure is dropping, and the baby’s heart rate is decelerating. We need to prepare for an emergency delivery right now."
Julian Cross didn't step closer. He adjusted the lapels of his expensive wool coat, his thumb furiously tapping on his phone screen.
"I heard you, Doctor," Julian replied, his voice chillingly calm. "She’s in good hands. You’re professionals."
"Julian, please," I gasped, tears blurring my vision as another contraction seized my body. "Don't go. The baby..."
His phone vibrated again. The name Chloe flashed across the screen in bold letters, followed by a frantic message: I took the pills, Julian. I can't do this without you. Please come to the Grand Regency.
"Chloe is having a crisis," Julian said, looking down at me not with sympathy, but with mild irritation. "She’s alone in her hotel room. She needs me."
"Your wife is losing blood, sir!" Nurse Tessa barked, holding a fresh pad against me. "She could die!"
"Evelyn is always dramatic," Julian scoffed, taking a step backward toward the exit. "She’s doing this to pull me away from my work. Stay with the medical team, Evelyn. I’m choosing her tonight."
He reached for his right hand, slipped off his platinum wedding band, and tossed it casually onto the bedside tray.

"Don't call me unless it's an absolute emergency," he added, sliding through the automatic doors.
The glass doors closed with a soft mechanical click. Outside, rain beat furiously against the window, mirroring the cold terror flooding my chest.
