Chapter 3 - Midnight Protocol

|
Six years ago, I walked away from the Vance fortune.
I was the only daughter of Harrison Vance, the ruthless founder of Vance Global Enterprise—a conglomerate holding private banks, medical technology firms, and real estate networks across the country. My father had warned me about Julian. He called him a charismatic leech who saw me as a shortcut to power.
To prove my father wrong, I relinquished my trust fund, dropped the Vance name, and married Julian in a quiet courthouse ceremony. I took a humble job as a freelance researcher while Julian used his charm to build Cross Enterprises from the ground up.
Or so he thought.
Dr. Bennett brought over a stack of emergency surgery consent forms. "We need to operate, Evelyn. But because your blood type is rare, we are struggling to source enough units from our central bank."
I reached into my purse, pulling out a worn leather wallet. Tucked deep inside a hidden compartment was a black card with gold embossed lettering. It bore a single name and a direct phone number: Arthur Sterling, Chief Legal Counsel, Vance Holdings.
On the back, my father had written in his sharp handwriting: The door is never locked. You don't have to explain why you came home.
Nurse Tessa helped me dial the number with her gloved fingers. It was nearly 1:00 AM.
Arthur answered on the first ring. "Vance Legal."
"Arthur," I whispered, my breath catching in my throat. "It's Evelyn."
There was a sudden, absolute silence on the line. Then, Arthur’s voice shifted from professional tone to quiet gravity. "Evelyn. Where are you?"
"City General ER. Bay Nine. I'm thirty-two weeks pregnant with a placental abruption. My husband just walked out, and I need rare blood."
"Give me thirty seconds," Arthur said firmly. "Do not sign anything from the hospital until my team arrives. Your father is being notified right now."

"Will he... is he angry with me?" I choked out.
"Child," Arthur replied softly, "your father hasn't slept a full night in six years. Hold on. The Vance empire is moving."
