Chapter 2 - The Silent Speaker

|
The silence in the room after Julian left was heavier than the alarm chimes.
Nurse Tessa looked at the blood on her gloves, then at the empty doorway. Dr. Bennett didn't waste time on pity. She turned back to her monitors, her hands moving with practiced speed as she called for more IV lines.
My trembling fingers reached for my cell phone resting on the nightstand. My heart was breaking, but a stubborn, foolish part of me refused to believe a man could leave his dying child.
I dialed his number.
Call declined.
I dialed again.
Sent directly to voicemail.
On my third attempt, the line picked up. I sucked in a sharp breath. "Julian! Please, the doctor said her heart rate is falling—"
"Turn it off, Julian," a smooth, sultry voice cut in through the speaker. Smooth jazz music played softly in the background, mixed with the faint clink of ice in a glass. "She’s just using the baby to control you. Let her scream to the nurses."
"Give me a minute, Chloe," Julian’s voice drifted over the line, distant and unbothered. Then he spoke into the receiver. "Stop calling me, Evelyn. Chloe took an overdose because of the stress you put on our team. I am staying right here."
The line went dead.
The dial tone echoed in my ear like a funeral bell. Slowly, I lowered the phone to my lap.
The pain in my stomach was excruciating, but something inside my chest froze solid. The desperate, begging girl who had loved Julian Cross for six years died right there in Emergency Bay Nine.
"Doctor," I said, my voice no longer shaking.

Dr. Bennett looked up from the chart. "Yes, Evelyn?"
"Forget about him," I said, staring at the ceiling lights. "Save my daughter."
