Chapter 8 - The Stolen Millions

Khloe took a slow, deep breath, wincing slightly as the movement pulled at her bruised side.
"Three months ago, I visited Uncle David at his private office," she began, keeping her voice low.
Marcus frowned, confused by the timeline. "About the pregnancy? Did you know then?"
She shook her head against the pillow. "No, this was before we found out about the baby. He asked me to help him review several large charitable grants funded through the Thorne Foundation. He said the numbers weren't adding up, but he couldn't trust his usual accountants."
Marcus recognized the program immediately. It was the crown jewel of their philanthropic efforts. It financed children's hospitals, orphan care facilities, and emergency medical research across the entire country. It handled hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
"What did you find in those grants?" Marcus asked, leaning closer.
Khloe hesitated, licking her dry lips. "Millions of dollars were disappearing, Marcus. Tens of millions."
Marcus sat upright, his spine stiffening. "What? How is that possible? We are audited quarterly by an independent firm."
"The accounting reports looked perfectly normal on the surface," she explained, her eyes wide and serious. "The math balanced perfectly. But when I started digging into the actual recipients... the hospital invoices were fake."
"Fake?"
"The suppliers listed on the invoices didn't exist. The companies were registered to empty P.O. boxes in Delaware and Nevada. The expensive medical equipment we supposedly purchased had never been manufactured, let alone delivered to the hospitals."
Marcus stared at her, the horrific reality of her words washing over him. "Someone was laundering money through the Foundation. Using sick children as a cover."
Khloe nodded, a single tear escaping her eye. "Yes. And whoever organized it, whoever set up this massive network of shell companies, had to have high-level access to both Sterling Medical Group's procurement system and the Thorne Foundation's authorization codes."
Marcus's expression darkened into something lethal. The betrayal was internal. "How many people knew you were looking into this?"
"Only Uncle David," Khloe whispered. "And now you."
She reached awkwardly across her body and pulled open the small, plastic bedside drawer with trembling fingers. Inside, resting next to her personal belongings, was a small silver flash drive. It was sealed inside a transparent, tamper-evident plastic evidence bag.
"I made copies of everything," she said, nodding toward the bag.

Marcus carefully picked it up, staring at the small piece of metal that held enough explosive information to destroy lives.
"The complete financial records are on there," Khloe said. "Every transaction. Every forged signature. Every offshore account we could trace."
