Chapter 10 - The Architect

The penthouse office overlooked the glittering city like a dark, silent throne suspended above the clouds.
Damian Voss stood perfectly still before the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, one hand wrapped loosely around a heavy crystal glass of expensive, untouched whiskey. The large flat-screen television mounted behind him replayed chaotic, shaky footage of wealthy guests hastily leaving the charity gala, while frantic reporters speculated wildly about an "unexpected medical emergency" involving the Thorne family.
No one outside the secure walls of the hospital knew the truth yet. Not the police, not the press.
Not yet.
Across the expansive room, a nervous, sweating assistant lowered his encrypted phone, his hand trembling slightly.
"Sir... Isabella has been detained by hospital security," the assistant reported, his voice cracking. "They have her locked in a holding room."
Damian didn't turn around. He didn't flinch.
"And the footage?" Damian asked, his voice smooth, cultured, and entirely devoid of panic.
"Hospital security secured every recording from the executive floor before our people in the IT department could access the servers to wipe them," the assistant swallowed hard, waiting for an explosion of anger.
For several agonizing seconds, only the faint hum of the city far below answered him.
Then, Damian smiled. It was a calm, almost pleasant smile that never quite reached his cold, dead eyes.
"She disappointed me," Damian murmured softly, taking a slow sip of the whiskey. "I thought she had more finesse."
The assistant shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot. "What should we do now, Mr. Voss? If she talks..."
Damian finally turned to face him. His impeccably tailored navy suit and silver silk tie made him look exactly like the respected, generous philanthropist he pretended to be, rather than the ruthless architect of a massive financial empire built entirely on deception, theft, and blood.
"We do nothing desperate," Damian instructed, walking slowly toward his massive mahogany desk and placing the glass down. "Desperate people make mistakes. Desperate people leave trails. We simply adapt the plan."
Meanwhile, inside the secure, windowless conference room at Sterling Medical Group, David Sterling stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Special Agent Rebecca Collins.
A massive digital map covered one entire wall, glowing brightly in the dim room. It was a chaotic web of connections. Names of prominent businessmen. Shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. Offshore bank accounts. Local, seemingly legitimate charities.

Nearly every single red line on that board eventually converged and connected to one massive, unassailable corporation.
