Chapter 14 - The Struggle in the Dark

|

The sudden darkness was disorienting, but Marcus's instincts took over instantly.

"Stay behind me," he hissed to Khloe, moving swiftly to position his body between the door and her hospital bed.

David, moving with surprising agility for his age, pulled a heavy, metal compact flashlight from the emergency supply cabinet mounted securely beside the door. He didn't turn it on yet, waiting for the right moment.

The metal doorknob continued to move. Slowly. Deliberately.

Once.

Then again, testing the lock.

Marcus exchanged a tense, unseen glance with David in the gloom. Neither man spoke a word, communicating entirely through shared adrenaline and a desperate need to protect Khloe.

The heavy door opened only a few inches, the hinges silent. A dark, shapeless shadow slipped inside the room, moving with practiced, lethal stealth.

Before the intruder could take another step toward the bed, Marcus lunged forward from the darkness.

He tackled the man with brutal, uncompromising force. The two men slammed violently into the drywall, the impact echoing loudly in the small space. They crashed into a rolling medical cart, sending it tipping over. Metal trays, stainless steel instruments, and plastic cups crashed across the linoleum floor, filling the dark room with deafening, chaotic noise.

The stranger fought back fiercely, his movements sharp and trained. He wasn't trying to escape back into the hallway. He was fighting aggressively, desperately trying to push past Marcus to reach Khloe's bed.

David clicked on the heavy flashlight, the narrow beam of blinding white light cutting through the darkness and illuminating the struggle. He threw himself into the fray, grabbing the man's free arm and twisting it painfully behind his back, while Marcus pinned his chest heavily against the wall.

"Security!" David shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice booming down the dark hallway. "We need security in here now!"

Within seconds, the heavy thud of combat boots echoed down the corridor. Officers rushed into the room from both ends, their own flashlights bouncing wildly off the walls.

Faced with overwhelming numbers, the intruder finally stopped struggling, going completely limp against the wall.

His face remained hidden in the shadows beneath the brim of the maintenance cap. One of the security officers stepped forward and roughly pulled the cap away, shining a light directly into his eyes.

Marcus frowned, staring at the man's unfamiliar features.

"I don't know him," Marcus stated, breathing heavily, his suit jacket torn. "He's a stranger."
