Chapter 15 - The Lethal Syringe

|
Special Agent Rebecca Collins arrived moments later, her chest heaving as she pushed through the crowd of security guards. She had sprinted up the emergency stairwell the moment the power failed, bypassing the disabled elevators.
She took one look at the man pinned against the wall, her trained eyes quickly scanning him for details.
"No hospital ID badge," Rebecca noted, her voice crisp and clinical despite her breathlessness. She grabbed his hands, inspecting his fingertips. "And I'll bet my badge there are no fingerprints on file for him under his real name."
She turned to one of the federal agents who had followed her up the stairs.
"Search him. Thoroughly."
The agent roughly patted the man down and then unzipped the canvas tool bag he had dropped near the door during the struggle.
Inside the bag, the agents found absolutely no wrenches, screwdrivers, or repair equipment.
Instead, they recovered a chilling collection of items, placing them carefully on the rolling tray table:
A pair of thick, black latex gloves.
A cheap, disposable burner phone.
A highly sophisticated, forged maintenance badge.
And a single, loaded medical syringe, the needle capped.
The syringe was immediately picked up by an agent wearing gloves and sealed securely into a clear plastic evidence container.
Dr. Caldwell, who had rushed in behind the security team, stepped forward and examined the small, printed label on the side of the vial through the plastic bag.
His face turned deathly pale in the beam of the flashlights.
"This isn't pain medication," Dr. Caldwell announced, his voice trembling slightly.
Rebecca looked at him sharply. "What is it, Doctor?"
"It's a highly concentrated potassium chloride solution," Dr. Caldwell explained, taking a step back from the table as if the syringe itself were radioactive.
Marcus felt a fresh, icy chill run down his spine, settling deep into his bones.
"What would that do?" Marcus asked, dreading the answer.
Dr. Caldwell answered quietly, his eyes darting toward Khloe, who was watching the scene with wide, terrified eyes from her bed.
"If injected quickly into the IV line of a healthy patient..." He hesitated, the horrific reality of the situation weighing heavily on him. "It wouldn't look like a murder. It would trigger sudden, massive cardiac arrest. It would look exactly like a tragic, unpreventable medical complication from the earlier trauma."

Absolute, horrifying silence swept through the room, broken only by the hum of the backup generators.
Khloe stared at the deadly syringe in the plastic bag, entirely unable to speak. The man hadn't come to threaten her or scare her into silence. He had come with a weapon designed to ensure she never left that hospital alive, and that her death looked entirely natural.
