Chapter 11 - The Disposable Pawn

|

Agent Rebecca Collins folded her arms across her chest, staring intently at the glowing web on the digital board.

"For two years, we've strongly suspected that someone at the highest levels of the city's elite has been laundering massive charitable donations through fraudulent medical procurement contracts," she explained to David and Marcus, who had joined them in the secure room.

David nodded grimly, his face illuminated by the screen. "I knew there were leaks, but the accounting was always too perfect to challenge without looking paranoid. They covered their tracks brilliantly."

"They did," Rebecca agreed, pointing a laser pointer toward a cluster of offshore accounts. "But we couldn't prove a single connection to Voss. He insulated himself with layers of plausible deniability."

She moved the laser pointer to rest directly on a photograph of Damian Voss, looking charming and philanthropic at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"Until your niece copied those encrypted files," Rebecca said, looking at Marcus. "That flash drive is the Rosetta Stone we've been waiting for."

Marcus stared at the screen, struggling to reconcile the charming man he knew from country club dinners with the monster orchestrating this scheme.

"You think Damian Voss explicitly ordered Isabella to attack Khloe tonight?" Marcus asked, his brow furrowed in disbelief.

Rebecca didn't answer immediately. She walked over to the table and picked up a printed file.

"We don't think he ordered a physical assault," Rebecca clarified carefully. "We think Isabella believed she was helping herself by taking matters into her own hands."

Marcus frowned, thoroughly confused. "What does that mean? Why would she attack my wife to help herself?"

"Because she wasn't the mastermind, Mr. Thorne. She was a pawn," Rebecca explained, pulling a series of bank statements from the file. She zoomed in on a specific series of encrypted financial transfers on the digital board.

"We just gained access to these records an hour ago. Isabella Rossi has been receiving massive monthly payments from three different shell companies linked directly to Voss International for the past eighteen months."

David looked grim, realizing the depth of the betrayal. "They bought her loyalty."

Rebecca nodded slowly. "They bought her access to your inner circle. And they promised her influence in return for information. A position of power beside Marcus. Perhaps even marriage one day, if she could successfully remove Khloe from the picture."

Marcus's face hardened into a mask of pure, restrained fury. "So she was manipulated into believing she was part of their elite circle."

Rebecca met his angry eyes with a cool, professional gaze.

"Manipulated," she agreed. "Paid very well for her services. And ultimately... entirely disposable."
