Marcus slowly turned his head to look at David. The older man’s face was carved from granite. Neither man needed to say the name aloud. The realization hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.
Damian Voss.
The respected philanthropist. The untouchable billionaire. The man who had dined at their tables and smiled for the cameras. He had just made his first, potentially fatal mistake.
For the first time in his meticulously crafted criminal career, federal agents had concrete, digital evidence placing a direct communication line between his private executive suite and an operative actively engaged in an attempted murder. The invisible wall of plausible deniability had cracked.
"Secure the perimeter of this hospital. Nobody gets in or out without my explicit authorization," Rebecca barked into her radio, the adrenaline of the breakthrough fueling her commands. "And get a tactical team ready to move on the Voss building. We need a warrant, now."

Instead of hearing his employee's stoic voice... he heard only a strange, echoing silence. It was a hollow, empty sound that stretched on for ten agonizing seconds.
Then, with a sharp, electronic click, the line disconnected completely.
Damian slowly lowered the phone from his ear, staring at the blank, black screen.
For the first time in years—perhaps for the first time since he began building his empire of fraud—his supreme, arrogant confidence faltered. A cold sliver of genuine doubt pierced his usually impenetrable calm.
He walked over to his desk and poured another glass of whiskey, his hand trembling imperceptibly.

He realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that the game had fundamentally changed tonight. He was no longer playing against oblivious donors and complacent board members. He had provoked a sleeping dragon, and the dragon was waking up.
And this time... he was no longer the only one making moves on the board. The hunt had officially begun, and he was suddenly, dangerously, the prey.
