Chapter 18 - The Aftermath

|

The morning sun broke through the heavy rain clouds, casting a pale, washed-out light across the city. Inside Khloe's hospital room, the harsh fluorescent lights had been dimmed, replaced by the soft glow of morning.

The chaotic energy of the night before had settled into a tense, exhausted vigil. Marcus sat in the plastic chair beside the bed, his head resting awkwardly on his arms, which were folded across Khloe's mattress. He hadn't slept a wink, refusing to leave her side for even a moment.

Khloe stirred, her eyes fluttering open. The pain in her side was a dull, constant throb, but the overwhelming terror had receded, replaced by a profound sense of safety knowing Marcus was there.

She gently reached out and stroked his messy hair. He woke instantly, sitting up straight, his eyes wide and alert.

"I'm awake," he said quickly, his voice raspy. "Are you okay? Do you need the doctor?"

"I'm okay, Marcus," Khloe smiled softly, her voice weak but steady. "I just wanted to see you."

Marcus let out a long sigh, leaning forward to rest his forehead against hers. "I thought I lost you last night. Twice."

"You didn't," she promised, her hand resting over her stomach. "We're still here."

The door opened quietly, and David Sterling walked in, carrying two cups of strong, black coffee. He looked tired, the deep lines around his eyes more pronounced than usual, but he carried himself with his usual formidable presence.

"The tactical team raided Voss International at dawn," David announced, handing a cup to Marcus.

Marcus took a sip, the bitter liquid burning his throat. "Did they get him?"

David shook his head slowly, his expression grim. "No. The penthouse was empty. His private jet logged a flight plan for a non-extradition country three hours before the raid. He knew the hit failed, and he ran."

Khloe let out a shaky breath, a mixture of relief and lingering fear washing over her. "So he's gone?"

"He's a fugitive," David corrected sharply. "He left behind a massive, incredibly complex paper trail because he had to flee so quickly. Rebecca Collins and her team are currently seizing every asset, server, and hard drive in that building. The empire is crumbling as we speak."

Marcus looked down at his coffee, processing the magnitude of the fallout. The man who had tried to murder his wife was on the run, but the danger wasn't entirely over. A cornered animal was always the most dangerous.

"What about Isabella?" Khloe asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"She is in federal custody," David replied, his tone devoid of any sympathy. "She is currently negotiating a plea deal, offering to testify about the money laundering in exchange for protection from Voss's remaining operatives. She realizes now exactly how disposable she was to him."
