Chapter 12 - The Velvet Box

|
Several floors above the tense strategy session in the conference room, Khloe watched the city lights glittering through her hospital window. The rain had started to fall, blurring the neon signs in the distance.
She couldn't sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, the horrific sequence of events replayed behind her eyelids with terrifying clarity. She felt Isabella's violent shove again. The sickening thud of her body hitting the sharp edge of the marble table. The agonizing, breathless pain that followed.
She rubbed her stomach gently, praying silently for the tiny life inside her.
A gentle, hesitant knock came at the heavy wooden door, pulling her from her dark thoughts.
Marcus entered quietly, carrying a small, steaming paper cup. He looked exhausted, his tuxedo jacket gone, his tie loosened.
"Chamomile tea," he said softly, offering her the cup. "From the nurses' station."
Khloe managed a faint, genuine smile, touched by the small gesture. "You remembered."
"I remember everything about you, Khloe," he replied, his voice thick with emotion.
He pulled the chair closer and sat beside her. For a long, heavy moment, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't uncomfortable; it was simply exhausted.
Finally, Marcus reached into his trouser pocket. He looked down at his hands, struggling to find the right words.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, the apology carrying the weight of months of neglect.
Khloe looked confused, taking a sip of the warm tea. "You already apologized, Marcus. It's okay."
He shook his head, pulling a small, black velvet jewelry box from his pocket. He held it out to her, his hand trembling slightly.
Inside rested the massive, flawless diamond wedding ring she had quietly, tearfully removed weeks earlier. She had taken it off after growing increasingly frustrated and heartbroken by his constant, relentless business travel and the growing emotional distance between them.
"I found it in your dresser drawer two days ago," Marcus confessed, his voice cracking.
Khloe lowered her eyes, a fresh wave of tears threatening to spill. "I wasn't leaving you, Marcus. I just... I needed to feel like I mattered more than the company."
"I know," he said, reaching out to gently touch her cheek. "You were waiting for me to notice it was gone. Waiting for me to notice you."
Tears finally filled her eyes and spilled over. "I just needed my husband. And you kept sending your assistant to handle my life."
Marcus gently, reverently took her left hand and slid the cold diamond ring back onto her finger, where it belonged.
"I can't change the last few months, Khloe. I can't undo my blindness," he promised, looking deeply into her eyes. "But I swear to you, I can change tomorrow. I will change everything."
Before Khloe could answer, the heavy hospital door swung open forcefully. David hurried into the room, his expression unusually tense, his calm demeanor entirely shattered.

"Marcus," David said sharply, his voice urgent.
"What happened?" Marcus asked, immediately standing up, his protective instincts flaring.
