Chapter 1 - The Crystal Shards

|

For several agonizing seconds, no one in the executive suite moved. The air felt thick, heavy with the sudden, shocking violence that had just erupted.

Marcus Thorne stood frozen near the door, his gaze locked on Khloe. She lay curled on the polished marble floor, her beautiful evening gown torn, both arms wrapped protectively around the life growing inside her. A single strand of blonde hair clung to her tear-streaked face, and every shallow breath she managed sounded painfully forced, echoing loudly in the silent room.

"Marcus..." Khloe whispered, her voice barely a thread.

The sound of her voice snapped him back to reality. The paralysis broke. He crossed the room in three hurried strides and dropped to his knees beside her, uncaring of his expensive tuxedo pants against the cold floor.

"I'm here," he said, his voice shaking with a terror he had never known. "Don't move, Khloe. Just breathe."

His trembling hands hovered uncertainly above her. He was terrified that touching her might somehow make things worse, might cause more pain. He was a man who had negotiated billion-dollar mergers without flinching, stared down ruthless competitors across boardrooms, and survived corporate wars that had destroyed other executives. But none of that prepared him for seeing his wife in pain. He felt entirely, hopelessly useless.

Behind him, Isabella Rossi's sobs grew louder, a dramatic, escalating sound that grated against Marcus's nerves.

"I told her to calm down!" Isabella cried, wiping away tears that appeared almost too quickly, too perfectly timed. "She became hysterical. She came after me first, Marcus. I swear it!"

Elaine Parker, the event coordinator who had rushed in behind Marcus, frowned deeply. She had coordinated elite charity galas for nearly twenty years. She had seen wealthy donors argue over seating arrangements, celebrities create scenes over minor slights, and politicians lie with practiced, effortless smiles. But something about Isabella's performance felt rehearsed. It was too loud, too desperate.

Marcus slowly turned his head. His eyes, usually calculating and calm, no longer carried confusion. They held only fury.

"You expect me to believe that?" he asked quietly, his voice dangerously low.

"I swear it's true!" Isabella stepped backward dramatically, pressing a trembling hand against her chest, playing the victim with Oscar-worthy dedication. "She lost control, Marcus. I was just trying to defend myself."

Marcus looked at the shattered crystal scattered across the floor near Khloe's head. He looked at the overturned chair that lay several feet away. Then, his eyes fell on the deep red mark already forming on Khloe's side, just above her hip.

Nothing matched Isabella's story. The physics of the room contradicted every word coming out of her mouth.
