Chapter 19 - The Rebuilding

A week later, Khloe was finally discharged from the hospital. The doctors had confirmed that the baby was perfectly healthy, and the placental separation had healed significantly with strict bed rest.
Marcus had transformed their sprawling estate into a fortress. He had hired a private, highly vetted security team to monitor the perimeter 24/7. He had installed new, state-of-the-art surveillance systems and panic rooms. He wasn't taking any chances, ever again.
But more importantly, he had transformed himself.
He canceled his upcoming international business trips. He delegated massive portions of his daily corporate responsibilities to his trusted vice presidents. He was present. He was attentive. He was the husband Khloe had been desperately waiting for him to become.
They sat together on the sun-drenched patio of their home, looking out over the manicured gardens. Khloe was wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, resting comfortably on a lounge chair, while Marcus sat beside her, reading the morning news on his tablet.
"Voss's assets have been officially frozen worldwide," Marcus read aloud, a satisfied smile touching his lips. "The federal government has indicted him on thirty-four counts of fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. He's the most wanted white-collar criminal in the country."
"Do you think they'll ever catch him?" Khloe asked, sipping a glass of fresh orange juice.
"They will," Marcus promised, his voice filled with absolute certainty. "He's used to living like a king. Men like him always make a mistake eventually when they are forced to live in the shadows. His ego won't let him stay hidden forever."
Khloe nodded, leaning her head back and closing her eyes, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face. The nightmare was finally, truly over.
"Are you ready for the board meeting tomorrow?" Marcus asked gently, setting his tablet down.
Khloe opened her eyes, a fierce, determined spark igniting within them. "I am. Uncle David and I are going to personally oversee the restructuring of the Thorne Foundation. We are going to make sure every single stolen dollar is recovered and redirected to the children's hospitals that actually need it."
May you like
Marcus smiled, reaching out to take her hand. He saw the strength radiating from her, a strength that had always been there, but that he had been too blind to fully appreciate until it was almost taken away from him.
"You're going to do an incredible job, Khloe," he said softly. "You're going to save a lot of lives."
