Chapter 8 - The Pension Audit

|
At two o'clock in the morning, the master study of the Howard estate was illuminated only by the soft glow of Elena’s personal laptop screen. Sitting beside her was Marcus, a brilliant independent forensic accountant whom Elena had hired using her private savings.
"Look at this pattern, Elena," Marcus whispered, pointing his pen at a series of complex wire transfers routing through offshore shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. "It’s brilliant, but evil."
Elena leaned closer, her eyes scanning the dense spreadsheets. "Where is the money coming from?"
"It’s not coming from the operational budget," Marcus revealed, his voice solemn. "She’s draining the employee pension fund. Over the last eighteen months, small percentages—just beneath the automated federal reporting threshold—have been siphoned off. It totals nearly forty million dollars."
Elena felt a cold chill run down her spine. "The employee pension fund? Thousands of retired dockworkers and logistics drivers depend on that money for their survival!"
"If Howard Global Logistics goes under or gets audited by the Department of Labor," Marcus added, "the company will be liable, and the entire executive board will face federal prison time. Vanessa is building a massive golden parachute for herself while leaving Julian and his mother to face the criminal fall."
Suddenly, the handle of the study door clicked.
Elena instantly slammed the laptop shut, shoving the paper files into a leather portfolio under the desk.
Julian stepped into the room, wearing a silk robe, his eyes heavy with sleep and stress. He looked at Elena and Marcus with a mixture of confusion and growing alarm.

"Elena?" Julian asked, his voice rough. "What are you doing up at this hour? Who is this man?"
Elena stood up slowly, stepping between Marcus and her husband. "Julian, you need to listen to me carefully. The future of your family's empire is hanging by a thread."
