Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The glass-walled executive suite of Howard Global Logistics overlooked the bustling skyline of Chicago, but inside, the atmosphere was icy cold. Elena sat near the head of the conference table, her hand gently resting on her lower abdomen. She was only a few weeks into her pregnancy, a secret she and Julian had held close to their hearts. Yet, the persistent chill in the air had nothing to do with the air conditioning.
Across the polished mahogany table sat Vanessa, the chief financial officer whose sweet smile had successfully charmed every board member for the past three years. Vanessa leaned back, casually flipping through a thick leather folder.
"I’m just saying, Julian," Vanessa said smoothly, her voice laced with honeyed concern. "The expansion into European shipping routes requires immediate liquidity. If we delay approval, the investors will start asking questions."
Julian frowned, staring at the financial summary on his laptop. "These figures don't align with the quarterly projections we discussed last month, Vanessa. Where is the five-million-dollar discretionary buffer?"
"It’s allocated toward operational security," Vanessa replied without missing a beat. She offered a warm, reassuring glance toward Mrs. Howard, who sat in the corner listening intently. "You know how delicate these international transitions can be, Eleanor. I’m simply protecting your family’s legacy."
Mrs. Howard nodded approvingly, looking at Vanessa with warm fondness. "Vanessa has served this family faithfully for years, Julian. You shouldn't micromanage every line item."
Elena remained silent, her dark eyes tracking Vanessa’s subtle body language—the light tap of her manicured fingernails against her pen, the quick, guarded glance toward the door. Elena pulled her personal notebook closer, jotting down three specific account numbers listed in the appendix of the report.
When the meeting adjourned, Elena waited until the room cleared before approaching Julian.
"Julian," Elena murmured softly, touching his sleeve. "I need you to look at those discretionary allocation codes again."

Julian sighed, running a tired hand through his dark hair. "Elena, you know Vanessa has my mother’s complete trust. Is something wrong?"
"She’s hiding something," Elena whispered firmly. "And I intend to find out what it is before it destroys this company."
