Chapter 25 - The Unseen Horizon

The recording ended with a harsh, abrupt click of static.
Elena sat motionless at her desk, the cold evening shadows stretching across the room. Her breathing was steady, her dark eyes reflecting the cool blue light of the laptop screen.
Down on the lawn below, the joyous sounds of the christening party were winding down. She could hear Julian’s warm, deep laughter echoing through the open window, calling her name as he walked toward the house.
"Elena? Honey, where are you?" Julian’s voice called out from the grand foyer. "The guests are starting to leave!"
Elena slowly closed the laptop, pulling the metallic flash drive from the USB port and hiding it inside the locket hanging around her neck.
She stood up, walked over to the window, and looked out across the sun-drenched grounds of the estate.
Beside the tall wrought-iron gates at the far edge of the property, parked in the shadow of the weeping willow trees, sat a sleek, dark sedan with blacked-out windows. Its engine was idling silently.
As Elena watched, the driver's side window rolled down an inch. A pale hand reached out, holding a small camera, a quick red flash catching the light as a photo was taken of the nursery window on the second floor.

Then, the sedan shifted into gear and melted away into the evening fog.
Elena’s hand rested gently against her throat, touching the hidden flash drive in her locket. The war for Howard Global Logistics was over—but the battle for her family's survival had only just begun.
