Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Whispers

By the following week, the quiet tension within the Howard estate had escalated into an unspoken war. Vanessa had become a daily guest at the estate, ostensibly helping Mrs. Howard organize a charity gala, but her true purpose was far more sinister.
Elena walked down the grand marble hallway, holding a stack of audited balance sheets she had requested from an old contact at the state treasury. As she approached the morning room, she caught the sound of hushed voices.
"I really hate to bring this up, Eleanor," Vanessa’s voice wafted through the doorway, thick with theatrical pity. "But I’m deeply worried about Elena. She’s been asking the accounting department for private ledger access late at night."
"What?" Mrs. Howard sounded startled. "Elena has no official role in financial operations."
"I know," Vanessa sighed softly. "And given her humble background before she married Julian, one has to wonder... is she trying to gather sensitive corporate data? There are rumors that a rival logistics firm is offering a massive payout for our internal routing codes."
Elena froze outside the door, her knuckles turning white around her folders. She felt a sharp knot tie itself in her stomach. Vanessa wasn't just trying to cover up her financial crimes—she was systematically setting Elena up to take the fall for corporate espionage.
Elena pushed the door open, her posture impeccably straight, her gaze icy and composed.
"If you have questions about my background or my loyalty, Vanessa," Elena said, her voice cutting through the room like a steel blade, "you should ask me directly, rather than whispering poison into my mother-in-law's ear."
Mrs. Howard gasped, looking uncomfortable, while Vanessa merely smiled, her eyes flashing with malice.

"Oh, Elena," Vanessa sneered lightly, standing up. "We were just talking about family security. You don't need to be so defensive... unless you have something to hide?"
"I hide nothing," Elena replied calmly. "Because unlike some people in this room, my hands are entirely clean."
