Chapter 17 - The Federal Trial

|

The trial, though highly publicized, was swift and unforgiving. With an insurmountable mountain of video evidence, financial audits, and co-conspirator confessions presented by the prosecution, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all twenty-four counts after less than two hours of deliberation.

The judge sat sternly on the bench, looking down at Vanessa, who stood in an orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt and her spirit completely broken.

"Ms. Vance," the judge declared, his voice echoing through the packed courtroom. "Your actions displayed a level of sociopathic greed and callous disregard for human life that this court rarely sees. You stole the life savings of working people and attempted to destroy the very family that welcomed you into their home."

The judge slammed his gavel down sharply.

"You are hereby sentenced to twenty-five years at a federal correctional facility, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, all seized assets will be fully restored to the employee pension fund of Howard Global Logistics."

Cheers and applause broke out in the gallery from dozens of retired company workers who had attended the sentencing.

Elena sat in the front row, holding Julian’s hand tightly. She felt no malice, only a profound sense of relief and justice restored. The stolen funds were safe, the workers were protected, and the corporate scandal had been transformed into a massive public relations triumph for Howard Global Logistics.
