Chapter 16 - The Unraveling of Vanessa

|

The federal interrogation room was cold and stark. Vanessa sat at the stainless-steel table, her high-priced defense attorneys sitting on either side of her, looking increasingly nervous.

Across the table sat the U.S. Attorney, flipping through a thick stack of plea agreement documents.

"Your co-conspirators in the Cayman Islands have already signed full confessions, Ms. Vance," the prosecutor said dispassionately. "Your bank accounts have been seized, your real estate properties are under federal forfeiture, and the video evidence of your attempted assault on Elena Howard is crystal clear."

Vanessa’s lead attorney leaned over, whispering urgently into her ear. "Vanessa, you need to take a deal. If this goes to a jury trial, they will destroy you. The public narrative is brutal—you stole from old dockworkers and tried to hurt a pregnant woman."

Vanessa’s hands shook uncontrollably as she looked at the photos laid out on the table—stills from the estate security cameras showing her cold face as Elena hung from the staircase banister.

"I... I gave ten years of my life to that company!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with insane bitterness. "I deserved that money! Eleanor Howard was soft! Julian was naive! I was the one running that empire!"

"You were an employee, Vanessa," the prosecutor corrected sternly. "And now, you are a convicted felon."

Realizing she had no leverage left, no allies, and no escape, Vanessa slumped back into her chair, her arrogant spirit completely crushed into dust.
