Chapter 1 - The Calculated FallThe opulent crystal chandelier of the Howard family's mega-mansion trembled as a sickening crash echoed through the marble foyer. Elena hit the cold, polished floor with a dull thud, her pregnant belly curled tightly inward to shield her unborn twins. For a horrifying few seconds, total silence enveloped the cavernous three-story entryway, broken only by the frantic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

At the top of the sweeping spiral staircase stood Vanessa Howard, her sister-in-law. Her perfectly manicured hands were still extended in mid-air. For a split second, an icy glimmer of triumphant calculation danced in Vanessa's dark eyes. She had finally done it. With one violent, deliberate shove, she believed she had eliminated the only obstacle standing between her and the family's hundred-million-dollar empire. But as heavy footsteps began pounding down the upper hallway, Vanessa instantly twisted her features into a mask of pure hysteria, letting out a bloodcurdling scream as she stumbled down the steps, clutching at her chest.
"Help! Somebody call an ambulance!" Vanessa wailed, fake tears streaming down her contoured cheeks as she threw herself near Mrs. Howard, the family matriarch who had just rushed out of the drawing room. "I swear I didn't want this! She rushed toward me in a fit of rage! I only pushed her hands away in self-defense! She lost her footing!"
The entire household had gathered at the bottom of the staircase within moments. Servants gasped in horror, and Mrs. Howard stared in utter shock at Elena’s lifeless body sprawled on the ground. Elena’s eyes were closed, her face ghostly pale, and her breathing appeared shallow and weak. To anyone watching, it looked like a devastating, tragic accident—a violent struggle instigated by a reckless, unhinged woman.
That was precisely the narrative Vanessa had spent months constructing.
"She has destroyed this family from the moment she married my brother!" Vanessa continued to sob dramatically, pointing a trembling finger at the motionless body on the floor. "She never loved Julian! She only wanted the trust fund, the inheritance, and the deed to this house! She threatened to ruin us all!"
The accusations poured out like poison, painting Elena as a gold-digging manipulator who had brought this fate upon herself.
What Vanessa didn’t know was that beneath her closed eyelids, Elena was wide awake. The fall had been terrifying, but Elena had practiced stunt falls for weeks in anticipation of this exact moment. Hidden inside the thick lining of her oversized knit cardigan, a customized shock-absorbing brace had protected her abdomen. Her mind was razor-sharp, listening to every venomous word Vanessa fed to the family.
Slowly, imperceptibly, Elena’s right hand slid beneath the thick fabric of her cardigan. Her fingertip pressed a single button on a concealed high-frequency transmitter.
The line connected silently.
"Detective Ruiz..." Elena whispered, her voice barely moving her lips, picked up by the micro-microphone pinned beneath her diamond collar. "The trap is sprung. The evidence is complete."

Across the line, a gruff, commanding voice replied immediately: "Hold on, Elena. Federal units are moving in right now."
Elena closed her eyes again and allowed the corners of her lips to twitch with a subtle, invisible smirk. Vanessa believed she had turned the grand mansion into Elena’s graveyard. She had no idea she had just walked straight into Elena’s courtroom.
