Chapter 12 - The Golden Trap

|

The annual Howard Global Logistics Corporate Gala was held at the historic Drake Hotel downtown. It was an event designed to project strength, wealth, and stability to international shareholders. Tonight, however, it was a battleground.

Vanessa had managed to evade immediate arrest by hiding at a private safehouse, using stolen credentials to access the hotel's private server room beneath the ballroom. She believed that during the chaos of the gala, she could execute one final, massive wire transfer before fleeing on a private charter jet bound for South America.

The ballroom was filled with sparkling chandeliers, clinking champagne glasses, and men in tuxedos. Elena arrived on Julian's arm, wearing an exquisite emerald green gown that elegantly concealed her growing bump.

Mrs. Howard walked alongside them, her posture stiff, her eyes filled with deep guilt and sorrow. Julian had shown her the forensic audit earlier that afternoon, finally breaking the illusion her former favorite executive had built.

"I am so sorry, Elena," Mrs. Howard murmured, tears shining in her eyes as they stood near the main stage. "I was so blind. I allowed that monster into our home and let her disrespect you."

Elena squeezed her mother-in-law's hand warmly. "All that matters now, Mother, is that we protect the company and our employees."

Meanwhile, three floors below the ballroom, Vanessa plugged a black encrypted hardware drive into the main network terminal.

"Come on, come on..." Vanessa muttered, her fingers flying across the glowing keyboard.

The screen read: AUTHORIZING PENSION TRANSFER: $48,500,000.00.

A message popped up: ENTER EXECUTIVE PASSCODE.

Vanessa typed in the stolen administrative code she had covertly key-logged from Julian’s laptop weeks ago. She pressed enter, a triumphant laugh escaping her lips. "Goodbye, Howard family."
