Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

I stood up slowly, matching Harold’s arrogant gaze with a look of absolute, icy calm. I smoothed the wrinkles from my skirt, refusing to let them see even a hint of intimidation.
“What makes me dangerous, Harold,” I said, my voice echoing clearly in the quiet hospital room, “is knowing that your company is currently trying to close a one hundred eighty million dollar corporate refinancing package, while your Chief Financial Officer has personally approved dozens of transactions containing potentially forged authorizations.”
The predatory smile instantly vanished from Harold’s face. It was completely wiped away, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock.
Beside him, Daniel went completely pale, his skin turning a sickly shade of gray. The theatrical suffering disappeared, replaced by genuine, suffocating panic.
“You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” Harold snapped, his voice suddenly loud and defensive.
“Then you certainly won’t mind if I advise the lending syndicate to thoroughly check those property valuations,” I countered smoothly. “I’m sure the federal regulators would love to see how Evelyn managed to electronically sign asset transfers from a corporate IP address in Manhattan while she was physically checking into a hotel in Paris.”
Harold’s face changed. The muscles in his jaw locked tightly. That tiny, almost imperceptible flash of genuine fear behind his eyes told me absolutely everything I needed to know. The fortress had a crack, and I had just driven a sledgehammer straight into it.
I slowly turned away from the two men and looked down at Evelyn.
She was sitting up straighter against the pillows. The terror that had clouded her eyes for decades seemed to have suddenly burned away, replaced by a quiet, determined spark. She reached beneath the heavy hospital blanket and slowly removed two thick legal folders.
Harold stared at the folders, his chest heaving.
The first document Evelyn held up was an emergency petition for a domestic violence protective order, heavily documenting the assault in the penthouse.
The second document was a comprehensive, aggressive divorce filing, demanding an immediate freeze on all marital assets.

“You can’t do this, Evelyn,” Harold whispered, his voice shaking with a desperate, pathetic attempt at control. “You’re making a mistake.”
Evelyn’s hands were trembling violently, the paper shaking in her grip.
