Chapter 20 - Unlocked Doors

Evelyn lowered her glass, a soft, understanding smile spreading slowly across her face.
And as I sat there in the late afternoon sun, for the first time in my life, I finally understood exactly what true revenge had become.
It wasn't about financially destroying two arrogant, violent men. It wasn't about the grand jury indictments, the frozen bank accounts, or the poetic justice of watching a billionaire trade his tailored suits for a federal prison uniform. Those were just the necessary mechanics of justice.
The real revenge was sitting right beside me.
It was the incredible privilege of watching a woman who had been systematically terrorized, manipulated, and controlled for thirty-two long years finally unlock her own front door. It was watching Evelyn walk freely into a beautiful house that legally belonged only to her, breathing the fresh air, and realizing with absolute certainty that no one inside those walls could ever hurt her again.
The sun began to dip lower against the horizon, painting the coastal sky in brilliant shades of orange and bruised purple.
Suddenly, the sharp, unexpected crunch of heavy tires on the gravel driveway broke the peaceful silence.
Evelyn and I both turned our heads. A sleek, unmarked black town car had pulled up to the front gate. The engine cut off, and the tinted driver’s side door slowly opened. A tall man in a dark, tailored suit stepped out, adjusting his tie as he looked up toward the porch. He didn't look like a delivery driver, and he certainly didn't look like a lost tourist. He had the unmistakable, rigid posture of a federal investigator.

He reached into his jacket, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and began walking slowly up the wooden steps toward us.
I set my iced tea down on the wicker table. The Mercer empire was dead and buried, but as the man approached, I knew immediately that some buried secrets simply refused to stay in the ground.
