Chapter 3 - The Retaliation

|

Three fast, calculated movements. That was all it took. Three sharp, sickening cracks echoed loudly through the tense silence of the penthouse suite.

Daniel’s confident smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated agony. His piercing scream cut through the room, bouncing off the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline.

I abruptly released his wrist, stepping back smoothly as his knees buckled beneath him. He dropped heavily to the floor, his designer tuxedo pants pooling around his legs, desperately clutching his hand to his chest. Three of his fingers were bent at highly unnatural, gruesome angles. He was sobbing now, a high-pitched, pathetic sound that completely shattered his arrogant facade.

Harold’s face contorted in absolute fury. The patriarch of the Mercer family lunged forward, his fists clenched, ready to physically destroy the woman who had just crippled his golden boy.

But I didn't retreat. I didn't show an ounce of fear. I turned my eyes directly on him, meeting his rage with a terrifying, absolute calm.

“Touch me,” I said quietly, my voice slicing through Daniel’s whimpering like a freshly sharpened blade, “and you’ll be explaining it to a police officer before the sun even comes up.”

Harold stopped dead in his tracks. His chest he heave with heavy, angry breaths, but he didn't take another step forward. He glared at me, his eyes filled with a mix of hatred and sudden, unexpected caution.

They honestly thought I was bluffing. They thought I was just an emotional bride throwing a temper tantrum.

They had made a massive, catastrophic mistake because Daniel had always introduced me to his wealthy family as “just a corporate compliance consultant.” It was a boring, generic title that sounded harmless. What he had never bothered to explain, or perhaps never bothered to truly understand himself, was the reality of my daily job.

I specialized in high-stakes forensic investigations for major global banks, elite family offices, and fiercely private, multi-billion-dollar companies. My entire career was built on dismantling powerful men. I was the person they called to find the hidden shell corporations, the meticulously forged signatures, the buried offshore accounts, and the fraudulent wire transfers. I made a living uncovering the dirty, devastating secrets that rich men paid expensive lawyers millions of dollars to bury.

They had just invited a predator into their glass house, and they didn't even realize the doors were already locked.
