Chapter 18 - The Coastal House

|
Six full months had passed since the violent chaos of that wedding night. The crisp autumn air had finally rolled in, sweeping away the oppressive heat of the city summer.
I drove my car up the winding, scenic Pacific Coast Highway, the ocean glittering brightly under the afternoon sun. I pulled into the crushed gravel driveway of a beautiful, modest coastal house. It wasn't a towering glass penthouse or a massive, echoing mansion. It was a cozy, single-story home with a wraparound wooden porch, surrounded by lush gardens and the soothing sound of crashing waves.
Evelyn had purchased the house entirely in her own name, using a small fraction of the recovered funds from the divorce settlement.
When I walked up the wooden steps, she was already waiting for me on the porch. The transformation was absolutely breathtaking. She had cut her long, heavily styled hair into a chic, modern bob that framed her face beautifully. The permanent shadow of fear that used to live behind her eyes was completely gone, replaced by a warm, vibrant light. She was wearing comfortable linen pants and a soft sweater, looking relaxed and genuinely happy.
Most importantly, she laughed loudly now. A full, deep, unapologetic laugh that filled the salty ocean air.
She stood up and pulled me into a tight, incredibly warm embrace.
“You look amazing, Claire,” she said, stepping back to admire me.

“So do you,” I smiled gently, taking a seat in one of the wooden rocking chairs facing the vast expanse of the ocean.
Evelyn walked over to a small wicker table and poured two tall glasses of sweet iced tea, handing one to me. We sat in comfortable silence for a long time, simply listening to the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the rocky shore below. The war was over, and we had both survived the fire.
