Chapter 13 - The Collapse

|

The fallout within the boardroom was immediate and catastrophic. The banking syndicate’s attorney officially announced that the $180 million refinancing package was indefinitely suspended, pending a full federal review. The money the Mercers desperately needed to keep their empire afloat had just vanished into thin air.

The two independent directors didn't waste a single second. Acting on their fiduciary duty to the shareholders and the lenders, they formally voted to place Harold Mercer on immediate, unpaid administrative leave, completely stripping him of his CEO title and his access to the building.

Daniel’s fate was even swifter. He was terminated on the spot, fired for gross misconduct, failing to disclose related-party transactions, and severe conflicts of interest. The company security guards were already waiting in the hallway with empty cardboard boxes for their desks.

Furthermore, the lenders officially stated they were legally obligated to refer the suspected massive financial fraud directly to federal authorities.

Simultaneously, Evelyn’s divorce attorneys quietly confirmed that they had already successfully obtained temporary ex parte court orders. The orders immediately froze all disputed marital assets, bank accounts, and real estate holdings before Harold could move another single dime offshore.

His empire was burning to the ground, brick by brick, right in front of his eyes.

Still, Harold clung to the desperate belief that his money and his sheer capacity for intimidation could somehow save him. He refused to surrender. He pointed a trembling, rage-filled finger across the mahogany table directly at me.

“You’re all listening to a violent psychopath!” Harold roared, trying to hijack the narrative. “Tell them what she did to my son on their wedding night! She assaulted him! She broke his hand! She’s a criminal!”

“I already did tell them, Harold,” I said calmly, reaching into my leather briefcase.

I placed a perfectly neat stack of documents right beside the infamous black binder.

First, I laid down my official, sworn police statement, heavily detailing the sequence of events in the penthouse suite. Next, I produced the high-resolution, color photographs taken by the police showing the dark, ugly bruising already blooming across my own face where Daniel had struck me. Then, I set down Evelyn’s official hospital emergency room report, detailing her fractured cheekbone.

Finally, I pulled out a sleek silver flash drive.
