Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Ambush

|

As Harold pushed open the heavy glass doors of the boardroom, a smug, triumphant smile plastered across his face, he suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.

The room was packed, but not with the loyal sycophants and yes-men he had expected.

Sitting stiffly at the far end of the long mahogany table was the lead outside counsel for the banking syndicate handling their $180 million refinancing. Next to him sat two of the company’s most senior, fiercely independent directors, their faces grim and unreadable. My firm’s top forensic investigative team had taken over the left side of the room, their laptops open and running complex data models.

And sitting quietly in the corner, flanked by two sharp-suited associates, was Evelyn’s ruthless new divorce attorney, along with a court-appointed forensic accountant who had been formally retained the moment the lenders received our massive legal preservation notice.

I sat directly at the head of the table, my hands neatly folded over a massive, thick black binder.

Harold lingered inside the doorway, his confident posture completely evaporating. Daniel bumped into him from behind, his heavily splinted hand awkwardly clutched to his chest.

“What the hell is this?” Harold demanded, his voice echoing loudly in the tense silence of the boardroom. “Who authorized these outsiders to be in my building?”

“I did,” one of the independent directors stated coldly, not bothering to stand up. “Take a seat, Harold. We have a massive crisis to address.”

I didn't say a word. I simply slid the heavy black binder directly down the center of the polished mahogany table. It stopped precisely in front of Daniel’s chair.

“What is this?” Daniel asked, his voice cracking slightly as he stared down at the imposing leather cover.

“That,” I said clearly, my voice carrying to every corner of the room, “is a detailed autopsy of your family business.”

With a trembling left hand, Daniel slowly flipped open the heavy cover of the binder.

His face completely drained of blood. The color vanished so fast I thought he might actually pass out right there in the boardroom.
