Chapter 1 - The First Blow

|

The first slap of my marriage wasn’t meant for me. It landed on my mother-in-law’s face before the expensive vintage champagne from our lavish wedding reception had even gone flat. I stood completely frozen in the grand doorway of the penthouse suite, the heavy silk of my custom wedding dress suddenly feeling like a suffocating weight dragging me down into the plush carpet. Harold Mercer’s hand dropped casually to his side, his face a mask of terrifying indifference, while his wife, Evelyn, staggered backward against a polished marble console table. The sickening sound of skin striking skin echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings of the suite.

My new husband, Daniel, was standing mere feet away. He didn’t rush to help her. He didn't yell. He didn't even flinch.

He simply sighed, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair.

“Dad,” he muttered, his tone dripping with the kind of mild, dismissive annoyance one might use if Harold had accidentally spilled a cocktail on the rug.

I couldn't process what I was seeing. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I crossed the massive room, my heels sinking into the carpet.

“Are you hurt?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly as I reached out toward the older woman.

Evelyn’s eyes filled instantly with hot tears, her hand flying up to her rapidly reddening cheek, but Harold stepped smoothly between us, blocking my path with his broad, imposing frame. He smelled of expensive cigars and cold arrogance.

“This is a family matter, Claire,” he stated, his voice dangerously low and smooth.

I stared up at him, my disbelief morphing into a cold, sharp anger.

“I married into this family three hours ago,” I shot back, lifting my chin.

Daniel grabbed my arm, his grip surprisingly tight.

“Claire, stop,” he warned, his eyes darting nervously toward his father.

Harold let out a dark, mocking smirk, adjusting his silk tie.

“Your new wife has a mouth on her, Daniel. You need to handle that.”

I pulled my arm free from Daniel’s grasp and moved toward Evelyn again, determined to check her injuries.

That was the exact moment Daniel slapped me.
