Chapter 17 - The Fall of the Empire

|
Two weeks later, the news officially broke across the major financial networks. Harold Mercer, the untouchable titan of luxury real estate development, had finally cracked under the immense pressure.
Realizing that his own son was actively cooperating with federal authorities to secure a reduced sentence, Harold panicked. He attempted to quietly liquidate a massive hidden portfolio of municipal bonds and charter a private jet to a country without an active US extradition treaty.
He didn't make it past the private terminal at Teterboro Airport.
Federal agents swarmed the tarmac, arresting him in handcuffs before he could even board the plane. The flight risk completely destroyed any chance he had of securing bail. The powerful billionaire was unceremoniously stripped of his tailored suit, processed through a federal holding facility, and forced to wear an orange jumpsuit.
Without Harold’s aggressive influence, Mercer Development Group was plunged into complete chaos. The board of directors desperately filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to shield the remaining assets from the massive incoming wave of civil lawsuits and lender seizures. The company was aggressively restructured, carved up by private equity vultures, and completely rebranded. The Mercer name was permanently erased from the sides of the downtown buildings they had once proudly built.
Daniel ended up accepting the prosecutor's plea deal, officially pleading guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy. He stood in a crowded federal courtroom, looking pale and completely defeated, as the judge sentenced him to forty-eight months in a federal penitentiary.

When the gavel finally fell, Daniel turned around in his chair, scanning the crowded gallery. He was looking for someone to offer a sympathetic glance. He looked for his high-society friends, his former colleagues, or the women who used to flock to his wealth.
The gallery was completely empty, save for a few bored reporters sketching his ruined face. He had lost his executive position, his fake marriage, and absolutely everyone who had ever admired his last name. He was completely, utterly alone.
