Chapter 14 - The Final Nail

|

I plugged the silver flash drive into the boardroom’s main media console. A massive, high-definition television screen at the far end of the room flickered to life.

“What is that?” Daniel asked, his voice barely a squeak.

“The hotel’s internal security footage,” I explained coldly. “I subpoenaed it through my attorneys yesterday morning. The penthouse suite hallway camera had a perfect, unobstructed view straight through the open double doors.”

I hit play.

The entire boardroom went completely, uncomfortably silent as the crystal-clear video began to play. The men at the table watched the digital recording of the worst night of my life unfold in absolute silence.

They watched Harold Mercer violently strike his wife. They saw Evelyn stagger backward against the marble console. They watched me rush forward to intervene, only for Daniel to aggressively grab my arm. They saw Daniel draw his hand back and slap his new bride across the face with terrifying force.

And then, they watched my immediate, calculated response. They saw me catch his wrist and execute the three sharp movements that shattered his fingers.

When the video ended, the screen faded to black. The heavy silence in the boardroom was absolutely suffocating.

Daniel’s expensive attorney, who had been aggressively preparing to threaten me with assault charges, slowly lowered his eyes to the floor, aggressively closing his notepad. He knew the self-defense claim was absolutely ironclad. He couldn't fight a video that proved his client struck the first blow against a woman trying to stop domestic violence.

My own lawyer had warned me from the very beginning that breaking Daniel’s fingers could carry severe legal consequences. I had never pretended otherwise. I had walked straight into the police precinct, handed over the complete video footage, provided the medical reports, and cooperated fully with the detectives.

Daniel had been desperately counting on me being too ashamed to admit what had happened. He relied on the traditional silence of victims to protect his reputation.

Instead, I had documented absolutely everything. I weaponized the truth.

After reviewing the irrefutable video evidence and the highly documented circumstances of defending a battered woman, the district attorney’s office officially declined to press any charges against me.

Daniel, however, was not going to be anywhere near as fortunate.
