Chapter 4 - The Hospital Confession

|

The morning sun cast a cold, unforgiving light over the city as we sat in the sterile, brightly lit waiting room of the emergency room. I had practically dragged Evelyn out of the penthouse suite at dawn, ignoring her quiet protests and Daniel's furious text messages buzzing endlessly on my phone.

When the attending physician finally examined her, his expression grew incredibly grave. Evelyn's cheekbone was visibly fractured, a deep, ugly purple bruise blossoming across the delicate skin near her eye.

“Can you tell me how this happened, Mrs. Mercer?” the doctor asked, his pen hovering over his chart, his eyes darting suspiciously between the two of us.

Evelyn stared down at her trembling hands, her knuckles white as she gripped her expensive designer purse.

“I fell,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I tripped over a rug in the hotel suite and hit the edge of a marble table. It was incredibly clumsy of me.”

The doctor clearly didn't believe a single word of it, but without her cooperation, there was very little he could do legally. He prescribed strong painkillers, handed us the referral paperwork for a plastic surgeon, and quietly left the room.

I waited patiently until the heavy wooden door clicked shut, leaving us completely alone in the examining room. The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. I pulled it out. It was a text message from Harold.

Come home right now. We can make all of this disappear. Don't do anything stupid.

Seconds later, a second message popped up on the screen, this one from Daniel.

You violently assaulted me last night. Sign the postnup Dad’s lawyer is sending over this morning, and we’ll agree not to press criminal charges against you. Be smart, Claire.

I stared at the brightly lit screen, reading both of the threatening messages twice to ensure I fully absorbed their audacity. They honestly believed they held all the cards. They believed their money and their name made them untouchable.

I slowly locked the phone and slid it back into my pocket. Then, I looked up at Evelyn, who was watching me with terrified, tear-filled eyes.

“How long has he been hitting you?” I asked gently, keeping my voice completely steady.

Her hands began to shake even harder, a small sob escaping her lips.

“Thirty-two years,” she finally confessed.

I reached into my bag and pulled out my sleek, silver laptop, flipping the screen open.

“Then we’re not making anything disappear,” I promised her.
