Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

|
The digital paper trail was a messy, arrogant disaster. Harold Mercer was a man who believed he was entirely too smart to ever be caught, which made him incredibly sloppy.
As I sat in the corner of Evelyn’s hospital room, my investigative team began feeding me encrypted data packets. The puzzle pieces clicked together with horrifying speed. First came the consulting payments. Millions of dollars were being quietly funneled out of Mercer Development Group into obscure, offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. These companies had no employees, no physical addresses, and offered no actual services.
Next came the construction invoices. The material costs for three of their largest downtown high-rise projects had been massively, artificially inflated. They were billing their lenders for premium Italian marble and state-of-the-art steel, while secretly purchasing substandard, deeply discounted materials through subsidiary companies they secretly controlled.
Then, we found the loans themselves. The entire $180 million refinancing package was aggressively backed by incredibly suspicious property valuations. The Mercers had bribed independent appraisers to overvalue their commercial real estate portfolio by nearly forty percent, artificially inflating their collateral to secure the massive bank loan.
But the final discovery was the one that made my blood run completely cold.
Buried deep inside a labyrinth of corporate ownership records were dozens of high-value asset transfers. Prime real estate, lucrative stock portfolios, and massive cash reserves were being systematically transferred out of Evelyn’s name and dumped directly into Harold’s private holdings.
What made it criminal were the signatures.
The transfer documents all carried Evelyn’s certified electronic signature. However, I immediately cross-referenced the exact dates of those authorizations with her personal passport and flight records.
On the days she supposedly signed over millions of dollars in assets from a boardroom in New York, Evelyn’s travel records definitively proved she was thousands of miles away, on vacations in Paris, Milan, and Tokyo.
It was undeniable, documented forgery. Harold was systematically robbing his own wife blind.

And then, the nightmare got even worse.
I opened the internal approval logs for those forged transfers. I stared at the screen, my heart breaking for the final time. The digital fingerprints were unmistakable. My new husband hadn't just stood by while his father committed fraud.
