Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit|

By the time I finally returned home, the grandfather clock in the hallway was chiming midnight. I quietly opened the bedroom door and found Ethan sleeping soundly on our bed, still wearing the expensive, tailored shirt I had personally picked out and bought for him just last week. He slept so peacefully, lacking even the slightest hint of a guilty conscience.

I did not wake him. Instead, I stepped lightly over to the dressing table, where he had carelessly tossed his leather wallet. With trembling but determined hands, I carefully extracted Ethan’s corporate credit card. I took clear, high-resolution photos of both the front and the back of the card, then slipped it back into its exact original position to avoid any suspicion.

Carrying a glass of ice-cold water, I moved to my home office, locked the door securely behind me, and booted up my laptop. Ethan was the Chief Operating Officer of Morgan Events Group, while Madison was in charge of the Partner Relations department. I had always been the quiet, unassuming sister who handled contract bookkeeping and held fifty-two percent of the company's shares through my grandmother's trust. They always thought I was too blindly in love and naive to ever check the actual numbers.

I logged into the company's secure financial system and began cross-referencing the last four digits of his card with the pending expenses awaiting my final approval over the past three months. What I found was even more sickening than the kiss in the parking lot.

There were exorbitant bills from luxury restaurants, deposit receipts for five-star hotel suites, and countless shady charges disguised under the vague label of "Client Entertainment." The grand total amounted to a staggering $38,600. They weren't just deceiving my heart; they were actively using my money, my family's legacy, to fund their despicable, secret affair.
