Chapter 17 - Gathering the Evidence|

I made a firm decision not to respond to a single text message, email, or voicemail from Ethan. My complete and utter silence was the most devastating psychological punishment I could inflict upon him.
During my remaining days at the hospital, I devoted all my energy to healing my surgical wounds, feeding Lily her first drops of milk, and meticulously rebuilding the impenetrable walls around my life. I placed a hard freeze on my credit, changed every single password from my personal emails and banking apps to the company's internal management software, and provided the police with a flawless, comprehensive timeline of events.
The lead prosecutor assigned to my case was a woman forged from iron. She called my hospital room and told me point-blank:
"I do not want to rush this into a messy family court dispute just to bicker over assets. I want to utterly crush him. Bring me the medical records, the IP logs for the loans, the audio recordings, and the documented list of protective order violations. I want it all organized into one clean, impenetrable file."
Melissa and I stayed awake for several nights in a row, aggressively categorizing every piece of evidence. The shady expense history at Morgan Events Group was also attached as a massive separate appendix detailing his corporate embezzlement.

Looking down at baby Lily sleeping peacefully in her hospital bassinet, I knew with absolute certainty that I was on the right path. I was no longer the submissive wife or the passive, forgiving older sister. I was a fierce mother, actively going to war to protect her kingdom.
The betrayal that was meant to destroy me had instead awakened something powerful. They had expected me to crumble, to weep and beg for explanations, but instead, I was meticulously orchestrating their complete downfall. The trap was fully set, and it was almost time to finally spring it.
