Chapter 9 - The Annulment

|

The spectacular fallout from the wedding raid sent massive shockwaves through the local elite social circles.

Celeste’s lavish, million-dollar marriage lasted exactly forty-eight hours.

Her wealthy, unsuspecting groom, who had firmly believed he was marrying a "debt-free vineyard princess," filed for an immediate, aggressive annulment the exact second he learned she was facing multiple federal fraud and conspiracy charges. He publicly distanced his family from the Bellacourts, releasing a devastating press statement claiming total ignorance of their crimes.

It only got worse for Celeste.

The high-end wedding vendors—the florists, the caterers, the designers—who had not been paid upfront, filed massive, crushing civil lawsuits against her personally when the fraudulent shell companies were frozen by the state.

Furthermore, the extravagant wedding ceremony footage, which was supposed to be her crowning social achievement, was subpoenaed and became key evidence for the prosecution. The videos clearly showed her laughing and drinking champagne while actively ignoring my pleas for medical help, completely destroying any potential defense that she was unaware of my imprisonment.

She was publicly disgraced, financially ruined, and completely isolated.

Evan’s reality was equally grim.

He initially tried to fight the charges, hiring an expensive defense attorney he couldn't afford. But when prosecutors sat him down in a sterile interrogation room and methodically showed him his own verified signatures on dozens of fraudulent wire transfers, his pathetic bravado completely collapsed.

He immediately accepted a harsh plea deal to avoid a protracted, humiliating trial. As part of the deal, he permanently lost his professional financial license, surrendered any remaining claim to the vineyard or my trust, and agreed to serve time in a minimum-security facility.

Victoria, refusing to admit defeat, stubbornly took her case to trial. She was brutally convicted by a jury in less than four hours. She received a severe, lengthy prison sentence for massive corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and the unlawful, dangerous imprisonment of a pregnant woman.

Celeste only managed to avoid a prison cell by turning state's evidence and aggressively testifying against her mother and brother, completely destroying whatever remained of their family bond. She left the courthouse entirely bankrupt, publicly disgraced, and universally despised by her former friends.
