Chapter 19 - The Open Door Initiative

As the vineyard’s profits continued to multiply under the cooperative structure, I found myself sitting on a surplus of capital that I had absolutely no desire to hoard.
I remembered the terrifying, suffocating feeling of being trapped by a family that used their immense wealth as a weapon. I remembered the cold bathroom floor, the agonizing pain, and the absolute certainty that if I hadn't possessed a secret emergency phone, I might never have walked out of that estate alive.
I decided to use the Bellacourt fortune to aggressively dismantle the very systems that had allowed them to thrive.
In the spring, we hosted a massive charity gala on the newly rebuilt marble terrace of the main house. It was not a gathering of elite socialites sipping stolen champagne; it was a gathering of fierce legal advocates, state prosecutors, and social workers.
I stood at the podium, looking out at the crowd.
"Tonight, we are officially launching the Open Door Initiative," I announced, my voice echoing clearly over the microphone. "This foundation will fully fund elite forensic accountants to work pro bono alongside domestic violence lawyers. We will aggressively track hidden assets, expose financial coercion, and ensure that no woman is ever trapped in an abusive marriage simply because her husband controls the bank accounts."
The crowd erupted into passionate applause.
As I stepped down from the podium, mingling with the guests, I noticed a quiet figure standing near the back of the terrace, pouring water into glasses at the catering station.
It was Celeste.
She wore a simple black apron over a modest dress. She wasn't there as a guest of honor; she had applied through the catering company to work the event as a server.
I walked over to the station. Celeste froze when she saw me approaching, her hands trembling slightly as she set down a water pitcher.
"Hello, Celeste," I said gently.
"Claire," she replied, her voice barely a whisper. "I hope it’s okay that I’m here. The catering agency assigned me the shift. I can leave if my presence makes you uncomfortable."
"You are working an honest job, Celeste. There is no shame in that," I said, looking at her calloused hands, a stark contrast to the perfect manicures she used to flaunt.
"The initiative you launched tonight," Celeste murmured, looking down at the table. "It’s beautiful, Claire. You are doing incredible things with the power you took back."

"We all have to pay our debts to the universe in our own way," I replied softly. "Keep working hard, Celeste."
I walked away, feeling a profound sense of closure. The arrogant princess was gone, replaced by a woman who was finally learning the true, heavy value of a single dollar.
