Chapter 2 - The Little Accountant

|

They had always systematically mistaken my quiet calmness for absolute weakness.

From the very first day I met the Bellacourt family, they mocked my plain, practical clothes, sneered at my humble government salary, and made endless jokes about the heavy, locked leather briefcase I carried with me everywhere.

Victoria regularly referred to me as “the little accountant” when introducing me to her wealthy friends, her voice dripping with condescension. Celeste constantly joked at family dinners that I probably sat in a basement counting individual grapes for a living. Evan would sit there, laugh right along with them, and then offer pathetic, half-hearted apologies to me later in private, acting as though the deep humiliation somehow magically disappeared when no one else could hear it.

What the arrogant Bellacourt family never bothered to actually ask was which specific government agency employed me.

They didn't know I was a senior forensic auditor for the state attorney general’s elite organized fraud unit.

For the last nine months, I had silently watched Bellacourt Vineyard systematically move millions of dollars through fake shell vendors, heavily forged payroll accounts, and dummy corporations registered to long-dead relatives. I had stayed entirely silent because Evan had repeatedly sworn to me, looking me dead in the eyes, that he knew absolutely nothing about his mother and sister's financial crimes.

Exactly two weeks earlier, I had finally accessed the internal ledger and learned the devastating truth: he had personally signed every single fraudulent transfer.

A violent, crushing cramp dropped me hard to my knees on the cold tile floor. The pain was blinding, a sharp reminder that my body was giving up the fight.

I reached a trembling hand into my purse and pulled out the heavy, encrypted emergency phone I only used during active, high-risk field operations. There was exactly one number programmed into it.

I hit the button. Special Agent Mara Voss answered on the very first ring.

"Claire?" Mara’s sharp voice crackled through the speaker.

"I’m locked inside the east bridal bathroom at Bellacourt Vineyard," I whispered, panting heavily as another wave of pain washed over me. "My water just broke. It’s too early. Send paramedics immediately."

Her professional tone shifted instantly into a deadly serious register. "Who locked you in?"

I looked at the heavy oak door, and despite the agonizing pain, I felt something deep inside my chest go completely, ruthlessly cold.

"The exact same people explicitly named in the sealed warrant."

There was a profound, heavy pause on the other end of the line.

Then Mara said, her voice like steel, "Stay conscious, Claire. Keep the line open. We’re coming for all of you."
