Chapter 10 - The Divorce Hearing

|
The divorce hearing between Evan and me was incredibly brief and clinically cold.
We sat in a sterile, wood-paneled courtroom. Evan wore a cheap, ill-fitting suit, looking exhausted, thin, and profoundly defeated. He didn't look at me during the financial proceedings, staring instead at his hands as the judge methodically stripped away his assets and finalized the dissolution of our marriage.
When the judge finally granted full, sole physical and legal custody of Hope to me, citing Evan’s severe criminal history and reckless endangerment, Evan finally looked up.
"Your Honor," Evan asked, his voice cracking pitifully. "May I speak to Claire for a moment?"
The judge looked at me, raising an eyebrow. I gave a single, curt nod.
Evan turned to me, tears pooling in his eyes, trying to summon the charming, apologetic persona that had worked on me for so many years.
"Claire, I know I messed up," Evan pleaded, his voice breaking. "I know I failed you. But I am so incredibly sorry. I just wanted to protect my family. Can you please find it in your heart to forgive me? I just want to see my daughter."
I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger. No sadness. Just profound emptiness.
"You didn't fail me, Evan," I said, my voice echoing clearly in the quiet courtroom. "You actively, maliciously endangered my life to steal my money."
I paused, thinking of the dark, cold bathroom, the excruciating pain, and the terrifying fear of losing my child.

"You locked me behind a heavy oak door beside our child’s very first breath," I continued, staring directly into his weeping eyes. "You chose a wedding cake over her life. There is absolutely nothing left inside me to forgive you for. You are a ghost to us."
The judge struck the gavel, finalizing the divorce. I stood up, gathered my briefcase, and walked out of the courtroom, leaving Evan weeping alone at the defense table.
