Chapter 4 - The End of the Marriage

|
Outside the bathroom, the live wedding band suddenly stopped playing. A man’s loud voice echoed over the microphone, jovially announcing that the cake cutting would begin slightly early.
A massive round of polite applause erupted from the terrace, followed immediately by Celeste’s delighted, high-pitched squeal, as if my agonizing physical pain were merely a minor scheduling problem they had successfully and brilliantly solved.
Then, Evan returned to the door.
"Claire, keep your voice down," he said through the heavy wood, sounding exasperated. "Mom says an ambulance is twenty minutes away. Just hold on."
"She never called one, Evan," I panted, clutching my stomach.
"I’m handling it. Just relax."
"No," I said, a terrifying clarity washing over me. "You’re protecting them. You’re protecting the image."
His tone hardened into the cruel, dismissive register he usually reserved for the estate employees. "After absolutely everything my family gave you, Claire, you can survive a few minutes without making a humiliating scene."
I closed my eyes, letting the final tear fall.
That was the exact moment my marriage definitively ended. It wasn't when I finally found his forged signature on the shell-company wire transfers. It was the moment he actively chose his family's polite applause over his unborn daughter’s life.
"Mara," I whispered into the glowing phone resting by my head.
"I heard him," Mara said, her voice crackling through the small speaker, vibrating with lethal, controlled rage. "EMS is currently holding at the south gate. My tactical team is exactly thirty seconds behind them."
Suddenly, massive, heavy pounding echoed down the service corridor.
"State police! Open the door!" a deep voice roared.
The cheerful wedding music outside died instantly.
Victoria’s panicked voice shrieked, "What are you doing? This is private property! You can't be here!"
A heavy, violent impact shook the doorframe. Once. Twice.
The reinforced lock completely exploded inward, showering the bathroom tile with splinters of wood.
Paramedics rushed toward me instantly, bags open, as heavily armed state investigators flooded the narrow corridor behind them. Mara stepped into the bathroom, knelt down beside me, quickly removed her tactical jacket, and gently placed it beneath my head.
"You did remarkably well, Claire," Mara said softly, checking my pulse.
Behind her in the hallway, Evan went completely pale. He was staring, wide-eyed and horrified, at the bright gold state insignia gleaming on the back of my encrypted emergency phone.
Victoria, still utterly blind to the reality of the situation, pointed an accusing finger at me. "Arrest her! She is nobody! She just works with stupid spreadsheets!"
Mara stood up slowly, her imposing presence completely silencing the hallway.
"Your daughter-in-law is the senior auditor who just successfully traced eleven million dollars in stolen funds through your family’s fake companies," Mara stated coldly.
The corridor went deathly silent.

Then, Mara reached into her vest and held up a thick, stamped warrant.
"And this lavish wedding just conveniently gathered every single primary suspect in one place."
