"I was so arrogant, Claire," Celeste continued, her voice breaking. "I was blinded by my mother's expectations, by the desire for status and wealth. I thought I was untouchable. But I lost everything. My marriage, my friends, my family."

"You made your choices, Celeste," I reminded her.

"I know. And I have to live with the consequences," she said, wiping away a tear. "But the guilt... it's unbearable. The thought of what could have happened to Hope... because of my selfishness... it haunts me every single day."

I took a deep breath, the anger that had fueled me for so long finally beginning to dissipate. I didn't forget what she had done, but I recognized the brokenness in her.

"I can't change the past, Celeste," I said slowly. "I can't undo the pain you caused."

"I know," she whispered.

"But," I continued, "I don't want to carry this anger anymore. It's too heavy. I forgive you, Celeste. For my own peace of mind, not for yours."

She looked up at me, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Claire. You have no idea what that means to me."

"It means you have a chance to start over," I said softly. "To build a life based on something real."

She nodded, a fragile smile touching her lips. "I'm trying. I'm taking classes at the community college. I'm volunteering at an animal shelter. It's... it's a simple life. But it's honest."

"That's a good start," I replied.
