Chapter 1 - The Wedding Spectacle

|

My water broke beneath a massive, glittering crystal chandelier while three hundred distinguished guests politely applauded my sister-in-law’s first dance.

The sound of the string quartet swelled, completely masking the soft, terrifying rush of warm liquid that spread rapidly across the polished white marble terrace of Bellacourt Vineyard. A sudden, violent contraction folded me completely in half, stealing the breath from my lungs.

"Evan," I gasped, desperately grabbing my husband’s expensive tuxedo sleeve, my fingernails digging into the fine wool. "Call an ambulance. Now."

He didn't immediately look down at me. He glanced nervously toward the crowded dance floor, where his sister, Celeste, was dramatically spinning in a custom-made silk gown that cost more than most people’s entire homes. His handsome face tightened—not with the sudden, paralyzing fear of an expectant father, but with profound, irritated embarrassment.

"Can you walk?" Evan muttered through clenched teeth, leaning down just enough to preserve the illusion of a loving whisper for anyone watching. "The photographer is currently filming the main rotation. Everyone is looking."

Before I could answer, Victoria Bellacourt materialized from the shadows near the bar. My mother-in-law’s perfectly manicured hand shot out, gripping my upper arm hard enough to instantly leave a deep bruise.

"Not here," Victoria hissed, her aristocratic face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

She violently pulled me away from the edge of the terrace and dragged me through a dimly lit service corridor. Evan followed closely behind us, his head down, saying absolutely nothing to defend me.

I begged them to stop. The marble floor was slippery beneath my shoes. Another contraction struck me, sharper and more vicious than the last, ripping a pathetic cry from my throat. I was only thirty-four weeks pregnant. The baby was entirely too small.

"Please," I cried out, struggling against Victoria's iron grip. "The baby is early. I need a doctor."

Victoria shoved open a heavy, unmarked bathroom door, forcefully pushed me inside, and immediately snatched the brass handle from the outside when I desperately tried to follow her back out.

"This child has already taken enough attention away from Celeste," Victoria said, her voice dropping to a lethal, venomous whisper. "You will stay quiet in here until the cake is cut and the press has left."

The heavy deadbolt clicked shut.

I stared at the thick oak door, completely stunned.

"Evan?" I called out, my voice cracking.

His dark shadow paused briefly beneath the gap in the door frame.

"Just ten minutes, Claire," he said, his tone laced with heavy annoyance rather than concern. "Don’t make this worse than it already is."

Their synchronized footsteps quickly disappeared down the corridor, leaving me alone in the dark.
