Chapter 8 - The Slap

"Stop making a ridiculous spectacle of yourself!" Doña Carmen hissed directly into my ear as she forced me into a hard plastic chair.

She looked around the crowded waiting room with paranoid eyes, desperate to ensure no one was witnessing a crack in her perfect family facade.

"You are humiliating my son," she spat, standing over me to block my view of the nurses' station. "Do you think I don't know what you're doing, Valeria? All of this little theater is just for attention. You are throwing a tantrum to ruin Diego’s workday!"

"No, señora... I swear to you," I babbled, my whole body trembling uncontrollably. The hard plastic of the chair sent a shockwave of pain up my bruised spine. Tears began to pour down my cheeks, completely unbidden. "Please... call the doctor. I feel like I am dying."

My genuine plea for help was the breaking point for Doña Carmen’s fragile ego. Her absolute need to control the narrative clashed violently with my undeniable physical agony. To her, my pain had always been a personal insult to her son's perfection.

She stood directly in front of me, her face turning an ugly, mottled red with suppressed rage.

The waiting room was packed with at least forty people. But in that fraction of a second, the ambient noise of the hospital seemed to vanish entirely.

"You just fall down and complain to play the victim!" she screamed, suddenly raising her voice loud enough for the entire room to hear. "You are a spoiled, useless brat!"

I looked up at her, my vision blurry from the tears, my mouth opening to beg for mercy.

I never saw her hand move.

Smack!

The sound of the slap was incredibly loud, sharp, and dry. It echoed down the emergency hallway like a gunshot.

The sheer force of her hand striking my face whipped my head violently to the right. A burning fire instantly erupted across my left cheek, spreading rapidly to my temple.

But the physical pain of the slap on my face was nothing compared to what happened next.

Because of the sudden, violent impact, my torso twisted awkwardly in the hard plastic chair to prevent myself from falling sideways. That abrupt, jarring movement caused whatever was already tearing beneath my heavy, restrictive girdle to finally and completely give way.

A blinding, agonizing bolt of white-hot pain tore through my abdomen.

A choked, desperate gasp—sounding more like the death rattle of a dying animal—escaped my throat.

A profound, absolute silence fell over the entire emergency room.
