Chapter 37 - A Mother's Promise

One warm evening, as I was pushing Mateo on the swing set we had built in the backyard under the mango tree, he asked the question I had been preparing for since the day he was born.

"Mama," Mateo asked, dragging his feet in the dirt to slow the swing. "Where is my papa? All the kids at school have a papa."

My heart skipped a beat, but I maintained a calm, warm smile. I stopped the swing and knelt in the grass so we were eye to eye.

"You do have a papa, Mateo," I said gently, brushing a lock of dark hair from his forehead. "But he doesn't live with us."

"Why not?" he asked, tilting his head with innocent curiosity.

"Because sometimes, people do not know how to be kind," I explained, choosing my words very carefully. "A long time ago, your papa hurt me very badly. And in this family, our most important rule is that we do not hurt people, and we do not let people hurt us."

Mateo frowned, his little brows furrowing in thought. "Did you tell him to go in a time-out?"

I let out a soft, genuine laugh, tears pricking my eyes. "Yes, mi amor. I told the police, and they put him in a very, very long time-out. Because it is my job to protect you, and to protect myself. We live here, just the two of us, because we are safe and happy here."

Mateo thought about this for a moment. Then, his face brightened. "Can I have a popsicle now?"

I laughed harder, pulling him into a massive hug. "Yes, you can have a popsicle."

As he ran toward the kitchen, I felt a profound sense of peace. The truth didn't break him. It just showed him that his mother was his absolute protector.
