Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage

People often ask how a woman ends up in a situation like mine, assuming we must be weak or foolish from the start. But the trap didn't look like a trap when I first walked into it. It looked like a fairytale.

Diego and I had met three years ago at an art gallery opening in Coyoacán. He was overwhelmingly charming, charismatic, and effortlessly became the center of attention in any room he entered. He courted me with massive bouquets of expensive flowers, surprise reservations at exclusive restaurants, and sweet, intoxicating words that made me feel like the most cherished woman on earth.

My parents, who had struggled financially their entire lives, were absolutely mesmerized by him.

"He is quite the catch, Valeria," my mother had whispered to me, her eyes shining with joyful tears on the day of my wedding. "You are going to have the beautiful, secure life that your father and I could never give you."

The golden cage closed its doors so slowly that I didn't even notice the locks clicking into place.

It began with subtle, seemingly caring criticisms.

"That dress doesn't really flatter your figure, my love. It makes you look a bit cheap," he would say, casually tossing my favorite outfit onto the bed.

Then came the control over my social circle.

"I don't want that friend of yours in my house, Valeria. She is a terrible influence and she's just jealous of our success."

Eventually came the financial isolation. He convinced me to quit my job as a graphic designer, arguing passionately that the wife of a senior partner didn't need to work for anyone else. Within a year, I had no money of my own. If I needed ten pesos to buy bread at the corner bakery, I had to ask for his permission and hand him the receipt afterward.

He took my house keys, claiming the neighborhood was getting dangerous and he wanted to be the one to ensure the doors were safely locked.

I was completely dependent, isolated, and entirely at his mercy. And that was exactly when the mask finally slipped.
